Every March, American patriots celebrate the time-honored tradition of growing out their 'staches in honor of Air Force legend, Brig. Gen. Robin Olds.
A true American hero, Olds was a triple ace fighter pilot who served in WWII and Vietnam. Though it was a WWII superstition for airmen to grow their "bulletproof mustache", Olds grew his iconic soup strainer beyond regulation as a gesture of defiance. By the time he served in the Vietnam war, his extravagant 'stache had morphed into a handlebar style.
Olds was quoted saying, "It became the middle finger I couldn't raise in the PR photographs. The mustache became my silent last word in the verbal battles...with higher headquarters on rules, targets, and fighting the war." - Fighter Pilot: The Memoirs of Legendary Ace Robin Olds
This Mustache March, we honor the heroic man behind the tradition: Brig. Gen. Robin Olds.
